Exhibiting the design

More than 35 000 visitors flocked to Decorex Cape recently, proving that the Cape's interior industry is alive and well. Melanie Froneman, director of Decorex SA, says: "By all accounts this year's exhibition has been the best ever, with a record number of local and international trade visitors attending the show.

"The quality of exhibitors was the key to the success of the show. Not only did they present themselves and their products in the most creative and aesthetically pleasing way, but attention was also given to the smallest detail and practical issues relating to exhibition stands."

A further indication of the overall standard was the record number of stands awarded for excellence by the judging panel.

"We are also happy with the successful Cape debut of Talk Show, a multi-disciplinary discussion forum which featured leading architects, trend forecasters, concept developers, an environment designer, décor stylists and magazine editors.

"It is most encouraging that designers now find inspiration in the world around them to create the extraordinary. Local materials, culture, craftsmanship and technology all work together to create a truly South African design vernacular."

Lehopo Lichaba from Cape Craft & Design Institute became the first Cape recipient to receive top honours in the Sanlam Young SA Thinking Ahead design awards with a lampshade woven from recycled tin.
