The events surrounding the 1976 Soweto uprising have been immortalised in history books, in films, in photographs - and now on social media.

The grandson of struggle stalwart Walter Sisulu, Shaka, and his friends have used Twitter to re-enact and recreate the events of 16 June 1976.

"I started talking about it to my friends and colleagues and decided we were going to do this, and embarked on in-depth research. A dedicated team of eight people came up with scripts after visiting museums and heritage sites."

The cast comprised 20 main characters and 80 extras. The main characters were chosen by the number of followers they had on Twitter.

Sisulu played veteran photographer Peter Magubane, Khaya Dlanga played Sam Nzima, the photographer who took the iconic photograph of Hector Pieterson, and comedian Loyiso Gola played a black policeman.

Dedicated account @YouthOf76 also tweeted the real-time re-enactment of the events of 16 June.

"Every year I would tell the story on my timeline and say: 'This is what happened'. This year it was so different to have a re-enactment. It was a much better way to tell the story and it involved so many people," said Sisulu.

"It's important for people to know what happened on the day and also to get the youth involved. We wanted to pay homage to our heroes and wanted to do something and be part of something cool."

Sisulu expressed his surprise at what a hit the re-enactment had become and said he was bowled over by the response from Twitter users.
