Customs intercepts Viagra tablets

The South African Revenue Service's (SARS) customs team was kept very busy in November by the usual mix of drug and commercial crimes‚ but its interception of 3‚340 parcels of Viagra tablets at ports could spoil the Festive Season fun for a different set of criminal minds.

In the period from November 1 to 30‚ the customs team had stopped 3‚340 Viagra tablets valued at over R300‚000 from coming through ports of entry. It said on Monday (3 December) that these tablets had mainly been sent in parcels from overseas to SA addresses.

In SA‚ these tablets - used to improve sexual performance - need to be prescribed as they can have negative side-effects on people taking them.

During the month‚ SARS also prevented almost 53kg of cocaine valued at nearly R14m‚ from reaching the streets along with 42kg of crystal methamphetamine valued at just over R13m from entering the country.

These drugs were being carried in "body wraps"‚ concealed in luggage (in powder‚ pill and liquid form)‚ swallowed‚ or in other "internal concealments".

SARS also assisted the police with the arrest of three individuals for (unsuccessfully) offering a bribe to a customs official. The individuals were attempting to have a fake South African passport‚ found in a parcel mailed from France and seized by customs‚ released. They are yet to appear in court.

Meanwhile‚ 122 bank cards were seized on November 25 at the Ramatlabama border post with Botswana during the random inspection of inbound vehicles. The two passengers were handed over to the commercial crimes unit of the police for further questioning and the vehicle was detained.

A total of 257 cashiers cheques from the ORNL Federal Credit Union to the value of over R5m in a parcel en route from the US to SA were also seized.

During the month‚ 18kg of ivory was also seized.
