More cars sold thanks to rentals and corporate sales

The automotive industry's improved sales figures are a result of rental companies buying new models, corporate fleets being renewed and high sales of entry level models according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), as reported in Business Day.

Sales figures for July show a month-on-month rise of 1,8% but a more impressive increase of 10,5% year-on-year. About 12,8% of sales throughout the country went to rental companies.

In an article published in Business Day, Naamsa's director, Nico Vermeulen says that he is disappointed with the figures as there had been an 8% increase in sales in June compared with just 1,8% in July. He says the figures are "cause for concern" and that the large, premium and SUV sectors of the market are still under pressure.
