Friday night 2009 Loeries winners

Two Grands Prix marked the opening of the 31st Annual Loerie Awards Festival tonight, Friday, 25 September 2009, held for the very first time in Cape Town at the Good Hope Centre: FoxP2 for its Achitecture and Interior Design entry, ‘FoxP2 Offices' and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg's Advertising Poster Campaign, ‘Cheaper Than Money', for The Zimbabwean - which also received a Cannes Lions Outdoor Grand Prix in June this year.

Grand Prix winner - FoxP2's Offices in the Communication Design Three Dimensional and Environmental Design - Architecture and Interior Design category

A total of 130 awards were handed out at the ceremony hosted by Ads24, two of which were Grands Prix, 11 of which were Gold Awards and four of which were Craft Golds.

The Creative Use of Paper

This new award, in partnership with Sappi, considers al paper-based entries. The winner of The Creative Use of Paper Award was The Motel for Humanoid's corporate ID.

Individuals recognised

Simon Camerer, executive marketing director of Cell C, received the Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award for his active contribution to building the brand's market position in South Africa. The Loeries committee recognised him as an outstanding example of the leadership, dedication, loyalty and commitment to a brand that it takes to do something special.

A Lifetime Achievement Award went to Nkwenkwe Nkomo, group chairman of FCB South Africa and chairperson of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), for his ongoing commitment and outstanding contribution to the brand communications industry over the course of a career spanning 26 years. By no means a contributing factor to this award, but as a reflection of his commitment to the industry, in 25 years, he has attended 25 Loerie Awards ceremonies.

The Young Creatives Award

Gold winner - FoxP2's Pathfinder, Bubbles, Meteor for National Geographic Kids Magazine in the Advertising, Print Advertising - Magazine Campaign category

The Young Creatives Award, launched two years ago to recognise outstanding achievement by talented individuals at the beginning of their careers, went to Sanjiv Mistry, copywriter at Ogilvy Cape Town and Joanne van der Linde, art director at Net#work BBDO. They each received a Gold Loerie and an all-expenses-paid trip to an international award show.

Creative Future Scholarship

The Creative Future Scholarship, launched in 2007 by The Loerie Awards in partnership with the SABC, was initiated to enable talented learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to study brand communication at a tertiary institution. The scholarship covers fees, study materials, accommodation and living expenses at an accredited university or college. Plus it offers mentorship and guaranteed employment in the communications industry after studying.

In 2009, over 400 schools in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal were invited to submit applications. Finalists were interviewed in each province and from these a recipient was selected. The 2009 Creative Future Scholarship was awarded to Busisiwe Mahlangu from Benoni High.

Student Golds

This year, one student entry received a Gold Award:

Jano Booysen, Stephen Galloway, Elske Nel, and Barbara Cilliers, from the University of Pretoria, for their Mixed-Media Campaign, ‘Ampli5 Rockit Festival'

And a Craft Gold went to:

Bruce Mackay, from the AAA School of Advertising, for his Illustration Craft, ‘The Ceasefire'

On Saturday evening, 26 September 2009, statue winners in the following categories will be announced: The Electronic Awards (Radio, TV, Digital, Online Advertising) as well as Live Events, Mixed-Media and Integrated Campaigns. The SABC New Voice Radio Award, the Vodacom Mobile Media Digital Award, The SpaceStation Internet Advertising Award and the Sappi Creative Use of Paper Award will also be handed out.
