What's worse than sitting next to someone on a long haul flight with garlic breath and smelly feet?

Having to pay luggage excess fees because you're over your limit. As a regular traveller who tries every trick in the book to pack light - I'm always nervous when it comes to weigh-in especially after a shopathon while away.

For a big trip planned for December this year every iota of packing space is essential. Dealing with beach and snow on the same trip means a doubling up. To save as much space as possible, I decided to post ahead gifts for family and friends we're staying with but also looked out for the lightest bag on the market.

Enter the just-launched Samsonite Engenero range that is made from 100% makrolon polycarbonate, a high-tech material developed for reliability and strength.

It has a striking organic self-reinforced design-shape that decreases the shell thickness whilst maintaining a high resistance to shocks and impacts. The result is a strong ultra-light suitcase - the Spinner 55cm (R3395) weighs in at just 2.1kg while the biggest, Spinner 75 (R3995) weighs 3.3kg which means I have 20kg for my use.

It features a lightweight ergonomic pull handle, carry handles and wheels, an integrated, programmable combi lock that is accepted by the TSA. Both sides of the clamshell design are full continued within stretchy zippered compartments - one with a see-through mesh and the other to keep your intimates private.

The Samsonite Engenero is available in metallic black, blue (my choice), dark red and silver. To locate a stockist, visit www.samsonite.co.za, call +27 (0) 31 266 0620 or follow @Samsonite_SA on Twitter.
