SA's 2016 maize crop of 7.8-million tonnes is 3.2% higher than estimate

SA produced 7.778-million tonnes of maize for commercial use in 2016, which was 3.21% or 241,625 tonnes more than the final crop estimate figure of 7.537-million tonnes provided in September.

On Friday, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' crop estimates committee (CEC) said the recalculated crop size for white maize was 3.408-million tonnes, which was 4.76% or 154,725 tonnes higher than September's final crop estimate figure.

The yellow maize yield was recalculated at 4.370-million tonnes, which was 2.03% or 86,900 tonnes more than the estimate.

"In the case of commercial sunflower seed, the final calculated crop figure remained unchanged at 755,000 tonnes. Sorghum and groundnuts were adjusted downward by 4.92% (or 3,650 tonnes) and 6.21% (or 1,170 tonnes), respectively.

"The soybean crop was slightly adjusted upward, from 741,550 tonnes to 742,000 tonnes," the CEC said in a statement.
