SA takes part in Spanish crafts expo

The wealth of talent in South Africa's the craft industry is being showcased at the Zaragoza International Expo in Spain.

This follows South Africa receiving an invitation from the Spanish government to participate in the Zaragoza Expo which started on Saturday, 14 June 2008, and will end on 14 September 2008.

About 100 countries from the European Union, the Americas and Africa are participating in the expo which is taking place under the theme “water and sustainable development”.

In line with this theme, South African crafters will showcase the depth of their country's craft industry.

Some of the craft products to be exhibited include painted ostrich eggs, traditional Khoi-san beadwork, cane baskets and natural handcrafted products harvested on the riverbanks.

Legendary groups and artists such as Jim-Jack, Vusi Mahlasela, Mafikizolo, Cape Minstrels, Ubuhle Besintu, Palesa, and Mahotella Queens will perform at various events hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture.

The events will kick-start with youth day celebrations on 16 June 2008 where the Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan will deliver a keynote address.

The former President Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebrations will be held from 14 - 20 July 2008.

On 5 August, the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Lindiwe Hendricks will speak at women's day celebrations.

From 1 - 5 September, events will be held to mark South African heritage month.
