SESSA appoints solar champion

The solar water heating division of the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) has appointed Irvan Damon as an ambassador to champion and educate Southern Africa about renewable energy and its effective role in addressing climate change. He will play an instrumental role in realising the division's vision to provide one square metre of installed capacity per person by the year 2020.

Damon believes the division is perfectly poised to help offset carbon emissions through solar water. "When it achieves its 2020 goal, the society would have made a significant contribution towards the country's commitment in addressing this man-made crisis," says Damon.

Pivotal role in carbon footprint

"Presently and in the future, solar water will play a pivotal role in helping to manage our carbon emissions by saving an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Just like tree planting sequesters carbon dioxide, solar systems will also help reduce one's carbon footprint.

Within his role, he will be responsible for making the division the public's number one solar hub of cutting edge, reliable information. "I aim to create awareness around its programmes, educating and exposing consumers and businesses to the environmental, socio-environmental and socio-economic benefits of installing solar water systems within their communities, residential environments and place of business," he explains.

The division is working alongside Eskom on the rebate system on solar water heating. While Eskom increases its residential rebates as part of an improved solar water heating programme, Damon stresses that these rebates will not be awarded to individuals that are not members of the division.

He says, "Making significant inroads in the solar water heating market could see huge benefits for the country as the electric geysers presently account for almost half of all electricity used by the domestic market."

Offsetting emissions, ring fencing carbon tax

The division is looking to launch the Sunwater for Life initiative which aims to open a new avenue for offsetting. Damon says this initiative is a platform where companies can offset their emissions in a truly sustainable and measurable manner.

"This initiative gives back by launching a solar system fund that will give big business and key players the opportunity to support solar water installations, creating a tangible green legacy, while improving the quality of life for beneficiaries as they gain access to hot running solar water."

Furthermore, he says the new car emissions tax should be ring-fenced and the funds used to install solar systems. "This will result in the funds being used for tangible green initiatives, creating a more stable grid." Damon hopes to lobby government and parastatals to achieve these goals.
