Sustainable garden project from Twinsaver, Turbo-Grow

Nampak Tissue's Twinsaver has established a new partnership with Turbo-Grow for a campaign to provide introductory basic tools, information and training on how to develop sustainable natural, organic food gardens for disadvantaged communities in five selected regions.

The Twinsaver campaign, the 'Softer Side of South Africa', is encouraging consumers to find positive, memorable and meaningful moments in their everyday life. The brand has just completed 12 countrywide mall activations where consumers were asked to participate by donating R20 in exchange for a sustainable food gardening DVD.

    Focus on permaculture

The CSI project will take place over an 18-month period and includes organisations and communities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. The gardens will be planted during mid-2010, and with the help of Turbo-grow, Twinsaver will be ensuring that the soil for each of the gardens is healthy and re-mineralised.

This will be achieved by mixing a finely powdered volcanic rock along with compost into the ground followed by the planting of the various plants and seedlings. Once this is complete, a project maintenance and mentorship program will begin with focus on permaculture knowledge that will be transferred to the recipients, to equip them with the knowledge to enable them to continue growing their own food, or even just supplementing their diet.

Hugh Wilson marketing manager at Nampak Tissue comments, "We felt that the best way we and our consumers could give back to communities was to contribute towards their basic livelihood in terms of providing them with nutritious food that they are able to grow and cultivate themselves. This will ultimately help to improve their health and quality of life."
