The first Tasha's was launched in 2005 at the new Atholl Square shopping centre in Jo'burg and was an instant hit with business people and daytime shoppers. "The concept came about from a gap I saw back then," Sideris says.
"The coffee shops you found were limited and the restaurants weren't operating during the daytime." Traditional coffee shops mostly served only toasted sandwiches, muffins and filter coffee - a stale recipe. "We forged a proper daytime dining café experience," she says. "We were the first to introduce that style; a relaxed environment with the highest quality and range of food cooked well."
For their second branch, Sideris and her brother Savva converted the Bedfordview Nino's they owned. Then, in 2008, while in search of capital to launch their franchise, they caught the attention of Famous Brands COO Kevin Hedderwick. They sold 50% of the business in a partnership deal with Famous Brands.
"It's every young entrepreneur's dream to be with a listed company," Sideris says. "Hedderwick liked what I was doing and decided to invest. The key was that we wouldn't mass-market the brand but tailor-make each store for a particular market."
